Porn and the Art of Vacuum Tube Fabrication

Watch out, this video of Claude Paillard hand-crafting vacuum tubes with a Swiss Army knife and a blowtorch is going to eat up 17 minutes of your life. It’s hypnotizing, like all the best porn. Great soundtrack, too. (Via Slashdot)

August 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDigitalTexas

I'm pretty sure the vacuum tube is a component in the radio that makes the transmission and reception clearer. Dunno how it works, tho.

August 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterThe Shrimp

Wow. What an elegantly done video. I loved it.

August 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTaylor

How can a video so simple be so awesome? I really enjoy the music, if anyone can tell me what it is, I would appreciate it.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBrenna

Hard to tell from the Google translation of the site linked to above, but perhaps he is building a radio transceiver to commemorate the invention of the triode vacuum tube. I think he builds a triode tube in this video. I remember going to the drug store with my dad to pick up replacement vacuum tubes for radios and tvs about 100 years ago.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterspriggig

A vacuum tube is the precursor to the transistor

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterScott

Not to mention one of the earliest forms of computer data storage. Vacuum tubes hold...wait for it... One bit of data. Yes, I said bit.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

i couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about in the posts/replies... couldn't imagine what was so interesting, and then I started the video... and COULDN'T STOP WATCHING, that was 17 excellent minutes of mesmerizing tech... steam punk fabricators should all watch this... it's amazing that things were ever built by hand like this, what incredible skill and detail

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterrmoore

OMG this is the coolest thing i ever saw : O

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterColdberg

I wonder how long it takes to make one single tube?

It's impressive how much work goes into even one single tube. I don't even want to think about huge projects like ENIAC that used around 20,000 vacuum tubes.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTom

thank you. that was great.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commentermobs

In the day of ENIAC vacuum tubes were mass produced, making it much more efficient.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBrian

it must be a guy thing... I'm not even the least bit wet. but it was interesting.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAngela

Booooooooring!

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterStephanos

I actually stopped what I was doing & watched this through, instead of Stumbling through it as I do most sites.
If you enjoy mechanics, technology, or just good 'ole hand-craftsmanship, you should enjoy this video thoroughly, as did I.

The song is a popular classic "The Man I Love".
Sung by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and others.

And like all porn, parts were obviously faked, but still, like porn, very watchable!

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSpacey

Yes, this used to be how electronics was done. Five tubes for an AM radio ("five-tube super heterodyne"), and something like 18,000 in the ENIAC computer. But it's not one tube per 'bit': the basic circuit is the 'flip-flop' which requires two tubes. Since ENIAC was 'digital' rather than 'binary', it used 10 flip-flops to store each decimal digit. Add to that a few flip-flops to store sign and decimal point, etc, and it comes to 28 tubes to store each decimal digit. BCD requires 4 bits per digit, so each tube represents approximately 0.14 bit.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterted

Amazing. Surely he should not be wearing a jacket while weilding that blow torch.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSam

no wonder the tranzistor phazed them out, just look at the amount of work required.

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMartian

The french make everything sexy

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterfitzgb

So Many People giving great remarks , butwa boring..

September 1, 2008 | Unregistered Commenteraces27

I thought it was rather fascinating. Better than porn. I only need like 10 minutes of porn and I'm done. This kept me glued the entire video. It looks tedious, but fun.

September 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterScadilla

lovely. was it tatum on piano?

September 1, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterrupert

September 1, 2008 | Unregistered Commentermr sad face

That was freakin boring. "the greatest video online" you say? Damn the internet sucks.

September 1, 2008 | Unregistered Commentertesti

That was incredible. I like others stopped stumbling (very unusual), and stop working on a project to watch that amazing care and craftsmanship, also the music was most excellent. Thank you very much for that rad video.

September 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMr. Graves

You mean using a Swiss Army knife, pliers, a ton of wires, a blowtorch, an electric welder, tons of other equipment.

September 2, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterbakkouz

The was the best 17 minutes of my life!

September 2, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterfreestylekyle

I can't imagine anyone calling it boring, the guy is obviously a master craftsman. Perhaps those who had trouble recognizing that fact are only capable of doing one thing with their hands.

September 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTom

Did I miss the naked part?

September 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterManny

I got bored after 3 minutes, how does it end?

September 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSir Colby-Tit

man this is relaxing

September 3, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterbobba fett

nothing else to do?

September 4, 2008 | Unregistered Commenteruh

Just in case you're ever down to a blowtorch and a swiss army knife, and you need to make 1970s electronics by hand, here's the how-to video!

And like porn, I imagine this is only fascinating if its the kind you like. And with porn, there's a fine line between something you cannot take your eyes off of, and something you can barely bare to look at.

September 4, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBushcraft

i came here looking for vacuum tube porn :(

September 4, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterupset masturbator

Best video EVAR. Shared with every craftsman, do-it-yourselfer, tinker-er I know.

September 4, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBill Vincent

Outstanding.

That those of you who didn't understand what they were seeing chose to post anyway is proof that our civilisation richly deserves the coming fire.

September 5, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterChris Leger

This guy is one of the few craftsmen left. Making a vacuum tube is quite an undertaking, just amazing. Great site, thanks.

September 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTom

Sweet jesus, why the hell was that so hypnotic?

September 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Truly Amazing. You sir, are made of WIN

September 7, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterChris

17 minutes of my life ill never get back...never.
