McCain's Fear

As Andrew Sullivan points out, McCain is playing a dangerous game by riling up the more panicky, gun-toting, vigilante contingent of the GOP. The question of Barack’s physical safety has haunted his candidacy since it was a vague notion in the mind of a child, and he and Michelle have spoken about the possiblilty of something happening on a number of occasions. In a very passionate speech in Iowa, Michelle explainded that they’ve decided not to be ruled by fear.
John McCain, on the other hand, is eating, breathing, and sleeping fear these days. Fear is his only friend. It’s what gets him out of bed in the morning, and it’s the weapon he thinks he can finally start winning this election with. Fair enough. God help him if anything happens to Barack Obama.
But if I were John McCain, I’d be worried about what these rabid idiots will do to me when I lose. You’d be hard pressed not to detect a hint of blame in that “stunned” quote, blame which is pointed directly at ol’ Johnny. They can’t believe you’ve put them in a position to salute a black dude, and they will not be kind to you on the way down. You rattled their cage, John. You woke them up. They’re hungy for fresh blood, John. Good luck.
P.S. There were more sharpshooters at the Obama rally in Indianapolis than I’ve ever seen in my life. This is for real.

I never in my life would have thought I'd say this, but: Sharpshooters? Excellent idea. There are some crazy SOBs out there. We need to keep Obama safe.
Were I McCain, I might be a tad worried about winning. What odds some Palin supporter will decide the old man's in the way?
