Katrina Vigilantes

Years later, and we still don’t know the extent of the societal breakdown in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This eight-minute Nation piece presents one horrifying aspect: a white community that shot and ran off black evacuees on their way to a National Guard station.

There’s a certain amount of fantasy-fulfilment in the accounts of the white interviewees. This is why they bought guns in the first place, so when the shit went down, they’d be able to shoot black people “like pheasants.” It didn’t matter that they were attacking unarmed refugees, the T.V. was telling them that the dark people were getting out of line, and white justice sprang into action.

Heck of a job, Brownie. (via C&L)
